We couldn’t make out what had happened, or what was happening, as we drove past the scene last week but we knew it wasn’t good. A large area of Ward Street was cordoned off with yellow police tape effectively closing the highway and there was this bus, at a distance, sitting silent amongst the flashing lights of emergency vehicles, in the middle of Lake Street.
It wasn’t until the next morning I heard what had happened and all know by now, a skateboarder and bus collided leaving a young man very seriously injured. Shocking and very sad.
Witnesses reported the skateboarder was travelling at a good clip down Ward Street, crossed Vernon Street, then hit a bus as it was making a right turn onto Lake Street.
As mentioned, I wasn’t there when it occurred, so I won’t comment further as to circumstances, legality or lay any blame here, but I will say that I was afraid something like this was going to happen.
This is not the first time a skateboarder has crossed Vernon at Ward at speed. I’ve seen it before while waiting to make a left turn on to Ward in front of the Hume Hotel. I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing and remember thinking “that’s absolutely nuts!” or words to that effect. But risky acts on our streets and roads are not limited to skateboarders >…. read on

How long has it been where you have seen a skateboard magazine with guys wearing helmets on the front cover? Color Magazine of Vancouver has a reflection issue but reminds us of the days where safety equipment was a part of the daily skate session.
Shane McCulloch didn’t know filming his buddies skate around would turn into something more than a weekend hobby.
He got into it as he wanted to learn to skateboard, however, he said he was never a good skateboarder. He didn’t want to get out of that scene so he began filming his buddies do tricks on the streets, or the skate park.
“I didn’t want to get out of the skateboarding scene so I started filming and it just grew and my filming has gotten a lot better over the years,” he said.
Slowly but surely this hobby became an obsession and soon McCulloch had to ditch his cheap camera.
He invested in a vastly superior camera and began experimenting with the exposures, angles and a whole host of other things.
While he was learning more and more about his camera he embarked on a project to get his buddies, as well as other amateur skaters in the area known.
He began this project four years ago, but the end is near as he hopes to complete the one-hour video by the fall.
“It’s not about making money,” McCulloh said about the video. “It’s just to get the skaters known out here and my filming known and just get more people interested in skateboarding.”
The video will feature skateboarders from all over the West Kootenay, the Okanagan, Vancouver and even the United States.
His filming has taken him to places such as Spokane, Kelowna and everywhere in between as he aims to capture those perfect shots.
The video will also feature one of Castlegar’s best skateboarders, Josh Evin.
“I’ve filmed a few professional skateboarders as well,” he said. “From around here I’ve filmed Josh Evin and a couple of people from Vancouver on the Anti Social team.”
As for local amateur skateboarders, McCulloch said he has filmed a ton of them.
Although an avid fan of filming skateboarding, McCulloch said he would film anything just as long as it got him behind the camera.
“Just the filming aspect is what I want it always keeps me on my feet,” he said.
Adding he was drawn into filming because he can not only say he did something, but he can show it.
“When I’m older I’ll be able to look back at it and say that I did something with my life,” he said.
