Kinnaird Youth Indoor Skatepark

Kinnaird Park Community Church Youth Pastor Matt Fontes and myself, Ty Smith, are working with a group of enthusiasts on a indoor skatepark right here in Castlegar. This has been 2 1/2 years in the making and now everything is falling in the right place to see the KYIS open for Xmas 2011.

Due to the generosity of the Rossland Skatepark Association’s membership we are setting up their ramp to use as the primary piece of the KYIS. The KYIS thanks all the supporters of this project.

Below are some of the photos during the demolition and cleanup.

Golden Stomp Down

The Golden Stomp Down competition brings out Golden’s amazing community spirit and dynamic talent from local skateboarders and cyclists. This year the Stomp Down will be held on September 11th at the Golden Freeride Park and is featured by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a community event in celebration of sport during the week leading up to Sports Day in Canada – a national celebration recognizing the power of sport to build community, fortify our national spirit and facilitate healthy, active living.

“Town Council and many community residents have expressed how important it is to support facilities and activities that encourage young people to be active. The Golden Freeride Park is an amazing park to come and have fun in,” says Lisa Reinders, Manager of Leisure Services for the Town of Golden.

“You can skate; bike or even scoot at the park and I have never seen it not being utilized. The Golden Stomp Down is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come and see what the Golden Freeride Park is all about and showcases the rare and unique talent that has come out of the use of this facility.”

Over the past four years the Golden Stomp Down has brought over 100 spectators, young and old to be entertained and enlightened by the challenging techniques nailed by the competitors; It sheds a positive light on what skateboarding and cycling is all about.

“The real success of the Stomp Down is the involvement from our youth and skateboard community- from local skaters, who help co-ordinate the event, to the local businesses, who donate prizes, the community spirit at the Golden Stomp Down can be felt and heard during the event with younger kids watching the competitors and being inspired to be ‘just like them’ and seeing the competitors beam with pride. It truly is what a great sports event is all about,” says Reinders.

The competition is open to all ages – skateboarders, scooters, BMX and Mountain Bikers. Riders will be divided into three categories based on their level of experience. Participants are asked to register between 11am and 12:30pm; the competition will begin at 1pm.

Participants must wear a helmet in order to compete.

Music will be hosted by Tracy Mihajic; prizes and sponsorships from local businesses.

Sports Day in Canada is a nationally recognized event hosted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Sports, ParticipACTION and True Sport with the goal to promote various sports events in the week leading up to, and including, Sports Day in Canada on September 18th.
